Spiritual Immune System
One of the parts of the human body that amazes me the most is the immune system. I took immunology, the study of the immune system, last semester and I've never been able to look at being sick (or staying healthy) the same way. I've been thinking about my immune system a lot lately because I've been sick for about a week and a half and yesterday, when I had my head positioned over my toilet puking my guts out, I had a thought. God is kind of like our spiritual immune system. I never really thought about how the symptoms we get when we're sick aren't caused directly by the bacteria or virus infecting our body, but are rather caused by our immune system trying to get rid of them. Our immune system causes the rise in temperature of a fever to try to kill the foreign material or causes us to throw up in hopes of getting the harmful stuff out of our bodies. So even though these processes are extremely bothersome, they are for the ultimate good of our body. And once our immune system conquers the bacteria or virus, it becomes stronger. So here's where God comes in. Sometimes things can "infect" our spiritual lives and cause us to get spiritually "sick." We may not even realize at first that something is harming our spiritual lives, but God, our immune system, always knows. And sometimes, God may ask us to go through painful processes in order to get rid of whatever is harming us. And just like symptoms of being sick can be bothersome and painful and last for a long time, the processes we have to go through to become spiritually healthy again may cause us pain and may last awhile, but they are for our ultimate good. And once we let God get rid of the harmful things in our life, we will always come out stronger.
