I've often wondered why David was considered a man after God's heart. When you first think about it, it seems odd because David was practically crazy at times. At one time he killed a man just to get the guy's wife and another time he danced until all of his clothes fell off! Not exactly attributes that come to my mind when I think of God. My mom and I were talking about this the other day and I came to the conclusion that maybe David was given this title because he was a man of action. Yes, he screwed up quite a few times, but he did something! I'm not saying we should all run around doing the first thing that comes to our head and not care about the consequences, but I don't believe that God wants us to sit around and do nothing. God gave everybody a purpose called the great commission. The great commission calls us to go into all the world and tell everybody about Jesus, not to get saved and become a Christian who is too comfortable in their lifestyle to reach out to other people. I think being a person after God' heart means turning Christianity into a verb. While I was writing this, I thought of a poem I wrote awhile ago. It doesn't really talk about taking action, but it kinda talks about what I think it means to follow God's heart.
When I look at a man on the side of the road
With his clothes torn and shaggy and a Bible in his hands
Instead of seeing a homeless man with nothing to offer
I see an evangelist preaching to thousands in stands
Then I am seeing with the eyes of Jesus.
When I hear a child singing in the pew of a church
Slightly off tune but worshiping God with all their heart
Instead of hearing a child too young to have a calling
I hear the next worship leader to have a song on the charts
Then I am hearing with the ears of Jesus.
When I am with that person who hurt me with their words
Who tore me down to hide their own insecurities
Instead of fighting back with revenge and anger
I forgive them and love more than I did before
Then I am loving with the love of Jesus.
When I find joy in every area of my life
Desiring to be everything that Jesus was
Becoming completely selfless and putting others before me
Seeing, hearing, and loving them just as Jesus does
Then I am one with the heart of Jesus.
