Glory from Pain

Ok, so, I'm a science nerd. Because I study so much science, I often like to think of corny analogies between science and my spiritual life. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. You can let me know which one this is. I stayed up late last night to study for a few of my finals so when I finally decided to go to bed around 3:00, I was so exhausted and ready for sleep! But, instead of sleeping, my mind wandered off to Newton's laws of motion (I have no idea why), specifically his third law. Put simply, this law states: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Maybe it was because of a conversation I had with a friend right before I went to bed, but I started thinking about difficult situations we go through in life and how every situation brings an opportunity to glorify God. When we go through hard times we can react in one of two ways. We can respond with discouragement and doubt or we can respond with faith and trust in our Savior knowing that He has a plan for us! I have found the second option to be extremely difficult at times, but always rewarding. Back to Newton. Applying his third law of motion, what if our reaction to every difficult situation was equal and opposite of that situation? Meaning, for every rough spot we go through in life, we turn around and react with an equal amount of trust in our Lord. This type of reaction would certainly bring glory to God! And what if the amount of glory brought from our trust was directly proportional to the difficulty of our situation? We could use the most difficult and hurtful things in our life to bring the most glory to the One who created us! I know, I'm making this sound really easy when it's actually one of the hardest things to do, at least for me. And maybe it doesn't make any sense at all, but it certainly kept me up at 3 o'clock in the morning!

  1. Christa, although I may have a biased viewpoint, I love this. I get the feeling that this is something Pastor Jeff at Central would also love. This is why I love science, all the little connections we make

  2. Hi Christa:
I'm a science nerd as well, specifically biology, and I make the same kinds of connections as the ones you speak of all the time. What you've said here makes perfect sense to me, and I love the idea. I've tried for years to do exactly what you write about here, without conceptualizing it like this. I've had many very difficult circumstances in my life from which God has delivered me, and for which I feel profound gratitude for His love and care through it all. Keep pursuing your dream!!!
